Stepping into the World of Work

During the final week of the summer term, our Year 10 students completed their work experience placements. This invaluable opportunity allowed them to step beyond the classroom and gain first-hand insight into the world of work, while developing essential skills such as confidence, communication, teamwork and independence.

Our students were placed with a wide range of organisations, from large multi-national companies to small local businesses. Placements spanned numerous sectors, including healthcare, finance, media, law, IT, hospitality, retail, education, public services, social care, sport, construction and engineering.

As always, our students were excellent ambassadors for Whitmore High School and the wider community. Employers commented positively on their enthusiasm, professionalism and willingness to contribute. Many students arrived early, stayed beyond their scheduled hours when needed, and demonstrated a strong work ethic throughout their placements, gaining valuable experience and developing key workplace skills. The placements also provided students with the opportunity to explore a variety of career paths, helping them to make informed decisions about their future education, training and employment aspirations. Through these experiences, students gained a deeper understanding of workplace expectations and the skills required to succeed in different professions.

The Year 10 Team were delighted by the many positive comments received from employers regarding our students' performance during their work experience placements. The feedback highlighted the maturity, enthusiasm and professionalism shown by our students. Here is just a small selection:

• "She showed excellent independence throughout her placement by taking the initiative without needing to be asked. She regularly cleared and cleaned tables, brought water to guests, and helped keep the restaurant tidy, demonstrating a proactive attitude and supporting the team during service.“

• "He was set the task of building a PC and completed it sooner than anticipated. He then proactively asked for additional responsibilities. When shown software developed by the team, he provided thoughtful feedback, suggesting that the interface could be simplified to make it more user-friendly and easier to navigate.“

• "She was a fantastic addition to the Year 4 team. She completed every task promptly and always gave her best effort. Rather than waiting for further instructions, she consistently sought out new tasks and opportunities to help. She also supported a maths lesson, confidently leading starter activities and explaining the different methods the children could use to solve the questions.

A number of our Year 12 students also completed work experience placements during the summer holidays. These opportunities provided valuable insight into the workplace and helped them explore their post-18 pathways, whether that involves higher education, an apprenticeship, or entering employment. We would like to congratulate all of our students for representing the school so positively and demonstrating such excellent employability skills.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the many employers and organisations that supported this highly valuable programme and helped make these experiences possible.
