Symphony of Student Talent Takes Centre Stage at Whitmore
What a treat it was to hear so many talented musicians perform at the School Concert on 4th February. The standard was exceptional, and the Music Department is incredibly proud of everyone who took part. We would also like to give a special mention to Katrin (12TXD) and Isaiah (12VFT) for their wonderful compering, as well as to Kabilan (11LMW), Moiz (11ZAB) and Kacper (11ARR) for their hard work behind the scenes as stagehands.
Real Book Group & String Group
The concert opened with the Real Book Group, who demonstrated impressive improvisational flair across a set of classic jazz standards. We then enjoyed performances from the String Group, delivering Vivaldi’s Concerto Op 3 No. 5 followed by Grieg’s ever-popular In the Hall of Mountain King.
Choir
The Choir delivered a moving rendition of Enya’s May It Be from The Lord of the Rings, followed by a vibrant performance of Man in the Mirror featuring soloists Onaly (11SZB) and Bhavesh (11MAI).
Keyboard Club & Guitar Group
Keyboard Club performed Clocks by Coldplay, with an ensemble made up entirely of KS3 students - many stepping on stage for the very first time. The courage it takes to perform in front of an audience should never be underestimated and the experience they gained is truly invaluable.
The Guitar Group followed with an impressive rendition of Hotel California by the Eagles, highlighted by a standout solo from Mayuri (10CEC).
Samba Ensemble
The Samba Ensemble energised the hall with the rhythms of Brazil, led by A Level student Karim (12VFT) - whom keen-eyed audience members may have noticed appeared in more than half of the evening’s performances!
Musical Theatre Preview
Rose (8OEC) and Billie (7DOD) offered a charming preview of the upcoming school musical with a beautifully blended performance of What I’ve Been Looking For from High School Musical.
Solo Pianists
· Daniel (10SRR) – Scriabin’s Impromptu Op. 14 No. 1
· Niv (13SNS) – Chopin’s Etude Op. 10 No. 1 in C and Prelude Op. 28 No. 17 in Ab
Both delivered their pieces with such apparent ease that one could almost forget the formidable technical demands behind them.
Concert Jazz Band
The Concert Jazz Band delighted Star Wars fans with a spirited medley from the saga, complete with a particularly memorable Cantina Band section. They followed with John Coltrane’s Blue Train, featuring solos from Luca (10CEC), Marco (7SZR), Rahul (11NSD), Peter (7OAW) and Kuvam (11JXV).
Function Band
The Function Band delivered the penultimate set of the evening
Katrin (12TXD) moved the audience with a heartfelt rendition of Jeff Buckley’s Lover, You Should’ve Come Over.
Onaly (11SZB) then returned to the stage, raising the roof with an electrifying performance of Paramore’s Ain’t It Fun.
Steel Pans
Finally, the concert concluded with the Steel Pans, a beloved and longstanding part of Whitmore’s musical identity. Their set featured vibrant performances of:
· Chega Mais – Black Banda Rio
· Close To You – Maxi Priest
· Travels – Lyle Mays
· Sapphire – Ed Sheeran
