Year 12 English Trip to See Othello

Year 12 Trip to See Othello

This year, Year 12 English Language and Literature students were lucky enough to see a production of ‘Othello’ at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith. A Level and AS Level pupils study this classic Shakespearean tragedy as one of their set texts. Students were given the chance to see the production on its opening night, which boasted a star-studded cast, including Martin Imhangbe (Bridgerton), Michael C. Fox (Downtown Abbey), Rose Riley (Life After Life) and Orlando James (Wonder Woman 1984).

Othello was a military commander who was serving as a general of the Venetian army in the defence of Cyprus against invasion by Ottoman Turks. He married Desdemona, a beautiful and wealthy Venetian lady younger than himself, without the knowledge of and despite the later objection of her father. Iago is Othello’s malevolent ensign, who maliciously stokes his master’s jealousy until the usually stoic Moor kills his beloved wife in a fit of blind rage. Due to its enduring themes of passion, jealousy, and race.

‘Othello’ is a timeless masterpiece that explores love under threat from lies and deceit and has been performed countless times since its publication. What made this production so unique was its adaptation of Shakespeare’s original text, which made this version feel both vibrant and exciting. Its innovative use of multiple actors to play one character, as well as its distinctive use of special effects brought ‘Othello’ out of the Elizabethan era and into the 21st Century. All in all, the trip was a resounding success for everyone involved and was both a fun and insightful event for the class.
