Whitmore High School's University Fair 2018

University fairOn Monday 26th February our school opened its doors to Year 12 students from across the borough and welcomed them to our University Fair.

Thirty one universities travelled here to talk to students and give advice and guidance on the next stage in their education and future career. The number of students attending surpassed all expectations with over 800 students passing through the fair. They had the opportunity of attending talks on Student Finance, STEM Careers, Applications to Medicine and Dentistry, Oxbridge Applications and Degree Apprenticeships.

Mr Gareth Thomas, MP, supported the school in organising and promoting the event and also attended the fair and we are very grateful for his participation.

The feedback from the universities that attended was overwhelmingly positive and they were impressed by the quality of the questions our students asked. Some of their comments are below:

‘Thank you for inviting our university to your University Fair on Monday. I spoke to very engaged students, who asked a lot of good questions regarding studying at university. The students showed interest in a range of our courses and were a pleasure to speak to.’

University fair‘Students were well prepared for the event and were able to ask pertinent and intelligent questions about studying at university’.

‘I was so happy to see so many lovely students who were enthusiastic and motivated to get the best possible education and future’.

Reports from two Year 12 and a Year 11 student are below:

An Evening of Opportunity – Whitmore’s University Fair

‘I expected the University Fair to be an opportunity for me to find out information that University fairperhaps I could not as easily find out about online. However it was far more than that. It allowed me to gain a knowledge of student finance, something I would otherwise have overlooked. The talk was immersive and kept me engaged throughout. The speaker from Leeds University gave us all we needed to know plus some of his personal experiences on how finance works. Additionally we also had the opportunity to ask a huge variety of universities general questions and the representatives often had backgrounds similar to my own which was very useful. There is no doubt that the University Fair was an exciting and extremely useful event which helped us to discover potential future pathways and have one-to-one discussions with helpful, knowledgeable representatives. I left with my questions answered and reassured.’ Yacine Adni Year 12 Student

University fair‘I felt a little daunted on going into the University Fair to talk to such great institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge University. However the welcoming atmosphere that Whitmore and the many universities created soon helped me relax.

I attended the talk on student finance, which made things so much clearer and also a talk on applications to Oxbridge. Both talks answered my many questions and cleared up the complicated Oxbridge application queries.

It was an exhilarating and exciting event and increased my understanding of what university life would be like and what it could offer. There was a broad range of presentations to attend and I left feeling that it was not such a daunting decision but a vital next step and a doorway to an exciting future.’ Juliet Connolly Year 12 student.

The invitation to attend the University Fair was also extended to Year 11 students and their parents and one student’s comments are below:

‘After going to the University Fair I realised that there were many universities that do aUniversity fair range of courses I would be interested in studying. I am now reassured that I can keep my options open. The talks, such as medicine by Kings College clearly informed us on the process of applying for medicine/dentistry. Talking to ex-students also gave me an insight into specific courses and university life. Overall the fair has enabled me to think about more options that I could study at University and also gave me good advice on how to get into specific courses. We were also given advice on what should go into a personal statement. It was a great opportunity to meet so many Russell Group universities as well as very local universities whilst being in Year 11.’ Pratishtha Tripathi Year 11
